April birthstone - Diamond

April birthstone - Diamond

Oh you lucky April babies – to have the King of all precious gems as your birthstone! Read on to learn more about a girl’s best friend:

WHAT IS A DIAMOND?

The word diamond is from the ancient Greek ἀδάμας – adámas “unbreakable”.

Diamond recipe:

1. Preheat oven to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit
2. Add carbon dioxide
3. Season with boron, hydrogen, or nitrogen to taste
4. Squeeze under pressure of 725,000 pounds per square inch.
5. Allow to cool before handling.

Diamond forms under high temperature and pressure conditions that exist only about 100 miles beneath the earth’s surface. The hardness of diamond contributes to its suitability as a gemstone. Because it can only be scratched by other diamonds, it maintains its polish extremely well. Unlike many other gems, it is well-suited to daily wear because of its resistance to scratching. Its beautiful light reflectivity and durability make it the most popular gem in all kinds of jewelry, from rings and necklaces to bracelets and earrings.

BEYOND WHITE DIAMONDS

White or clear gem diamonds usually decrease in value as a tint or color becomes more obvious. Just the opposite happens with fancy color diamonds: Their value generally increases with the strength and purity of the color. Large, vivid fancy color diamonds are extremely rare and very valuable. They come in almost any color you can imagine. Red, green, purple, and orange are generally the most rare, followed by pink and blue. Yellows and browns are the most common fancy colors. Source: GIA.com

CHOCOLATE DIAMONDS

Bremer Jewelry is proud to carry Le Vian®, a company with an expansive jewelry history and renowned for their Chocolate Diamonds®. “Chocolate Diamond” is a name trademarked by Le Vian to classify diamonds that meet their strict standards for the fancy color brown diamonds they use in their innovative and unique jewelry.

Not every brown diamond qualifies for the stringent standards that Le Vian sets for Chocolate Diamonds. The strength of color is one of the most important factors in determining the value of a natural color diamond. Chocolate Diamonds must have a certain hue, tone and saturation, rating between C4 and C7 on Argyle’s color scale. Brown diamonds within that range are the richer, deeper champagne colors, and correspond to the fancy dark browns on the Gemological Institute of America’s color chart.

Le Vian 14k Rose Gold Diamond Fashion Ring (1DIRG25338) – $999

The richer the color saturation and the darker the tone of color of the natural brown diamond, the more rare that diamond is considered. Chocolate Diamonds must have a clarity of SI or higher — Slightly Included means it’s “eye clean,” so that inclusions aren’t visible to the naked eye. Note that fewer than 5% of the diamonds from the Argyle mine meet these standards. Source: www.Levian.com

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF DIAMONDS:

Some people believe that the diamond’s pure white light helps to bring our lives into a cohesive whole, that diamond brings love and clarity into partnerships, bonding relationships. Diamond is said to be a sign of commitment and fidelity, and instills trust to relationships and situations. Some say diamond is an energy amplifier and will bring strength and endurance to all energies and will enhance the power of other crystals. HOW TO CHOOSE A DIAMOND

CHOOSE YOUR JEWELER CAREFULLY

Your jeweler’s standards should be as high as your own! You want your jeweler to possess expert training and answer any questions you have in a clear and simple manner. What questions should you be asking? Here are a few important ones to get you started!

In addition to explaining the 4Cs of Diamond Quality to you, a good jewelry will SHOW you the differences between similar stones. They should also be able to help you compare several different stones that fall in your budget.

UNDERSTAND THE 4 C’S OF DIAMOND QUALITY

This basic knowledge will help you understand a diamond’s value and price. The 4Cs of diamond quality will provide you with the information you need to know the diamond’s actual quality.

INSIST ON A DIAMOND GRADING REPORT

A diamond grading report from an unbiased, scientific source is more than important information, it’s proof of what you are purchasing. The differences in diamonds can be so subtle, even a trained jeweler can’t recognize them without lab equipment. Insist that any diamond you buy come with a verification of its quality.

PROTECT YOUR PURCHASE

Have your diamond appraised and insured. Appraisers and insurers rely on diamond grading reports to accurately evaluate the value of gems.

HOW TO CARE FOR AND CLEAN DIAMOND JEWELRY

Diamonds are natural magnets for grease, so they’re not easy to keep clean. When a diamond is handled, the oils from your fingers adhere to the diamond’s surface and affect its brilliance and fire.

If you wear your diamond jewelry regularly, you should bring it to Bremer Jewelry for professional cleaning once every six months. We can also inspect your jewelry at the time of cleaning for any signs of wear and tear including loose prongs or settings. While diamonds themselves are very durable, the metals that secure them in place are vulnerable to everyday wear and tear. Avoid the heartbreak and financial cost of lost diamonds by letting us periodically inspect your settings!
